6:34 pm - Introduction.

First of all, I used to be a member of this on my old account but probably never posted. I notice that not many people are members of this community; I'm thinking I need to advertise or something.

My name is Jordan and I am a 19 year old college student from OH living in PA currently. I have been riding for twelve years and showing for 10. I started off riding saddleseat on Morgans in Alpharetta, GA and then moved up to OH and rode at the Lavery's (World Champion ASBs). I have ridden some in other seats, but saddleseat has always been my calling. I was always a big fan of Morgans but then I got more into ASBs... although my next horse will probably be a Morgan.

My first horse and only horse was given to me as my 17th birthday present, after I had been riding for over half of my life. At the time, he was 3 years old. He was extremely green and was basically a pasture horse at his old barn--broke to drive and broke to ride (but only knew strict basics). He is out of Reserve Five-Gaited World Champion and Grand National nominated sire "Bi Mi World Premier" and another nice Five-Gaited mare, Meg-A-Bucks.

"Fred" and I started off on good terms but I eventually became so afraid of him that I didn't ride him for 6-8 months. My last resort was to take him to another barn. Luckily, my new trainer helped me "fix" him. I went from being deathly afraid of him to taking the time to bond and now I can ride him bareback in a halter. We both still have a lot of work, but he and I have improved 160%!

FRED!Collapse )

Nice to meet you guys! :-p

It's pretty simple. If you ride horses, you know this. Stuff is important, if not vital. Stuff is what keeps you mounted, keeps you prepared, and keeps you qualified. Stuff pretty much makes the equine world go 'round. And in the equine world, this stuff is called tack.

"tack.noun: the gear used in equipping a horse"

Now that's pretty vauge if you ask me. (The writers of dictionary. com are obviously not horse people) But in my opinion, tack can be anything that you or your horse uses in order to preform the nessessary task at hand. And look good doing it. This community is devoted to finding that latest and greatest tack on the market, and posting reviews, pictures, comments about it. Weather it be spurs or crops, derbys or chaps.

3:18 pm - Horse Illustrated

I normally don't read Horse Illustrated since it never pertains to Saddlebreds, but in case you haven't seen it, there's a pretty decent article about what saddleseat judges look for in the show ring :)

10:03 pm - From the outside looking ...

Hi Everyone-

I am a hunter rider.
As you would expect, I have heard the typical bad rumors about the saddle seat discipline, but I don't want to judge a whole discipline by a few bad rumors. I'm actually interested in trying it out someday, because it looks like a lot of fun.

However, I made a post over in equestrian about my first experiences with a real, bona fide saddle seat barn. The link is here.

I'm not trying to start a war here, and I'm honestly really interested in the sport and I think the high stepping horses are beautiful, but I'm hoping that some of the people in this community will be willing to answer some of the questions I asked in my original post.

Hoping for informative, flame-free responses,

10:39 am - New Member

Hi all! I just joined, oh about 1 minute ago, and I thought I'd introduce myself as this community needs some activity!

I'm a Dressage Queen-turned-Saddle seat Maven (okay not QUITE yet but I'm getting there) that lives in Massachusetts, and I'm riding Morgans. My trainer is aiming me for the pleasure ring, and we're already talking about shows this season, which after riding hunter/jumper and dressage for almost 16 years and only showing once is a biiiig deal to me because I want to show! I had my second lesson yesterday and each time, the lesson gets better and I feel better up there and my body is adjusting to the position better. I still have lots of trouble with my heels, and sitting back in the cutback, and just my lower leg position in general (not to mention it is SO WEIRD to squeeze with my thighs!), but the season is a ways away and I have faith!

Anyway, I'm riding at Burkland Farm in Rowley, MA, which was the late S. Robert "Doc" Orcutt's farm--Morgan people should recognize his name. His grandsons are running the farm, and I'm riding with the older of the two, Joshua Noble, son of a well-known MA vet, Helen Noble, DVM. Josh is an awesome guy, knows a lot and has made me fall in love with the Morgan breed. Previously, I'd taken 3 lessons on American Saddlebreds in Kentucky (scattered over a couple of years), and wanted to find a barn in Massachusetts that had Saddle seat Saddlebreds, but after talking with Josh, and really hitting it off with him, I made the move to Morgans. Man am I glad I did! But, he will be getting some Saddlebreds in for training, so it'll be nice to get up on them again.

I also come bearing some pictures from yesterday's lesson; I handed Josh a camera and told him to have fun! Fun included getting the whip out and making firecracker noises, and I totally loved it. I can't wait for next week (double reins, gah!), I'm so in love with this discipline that I never want to get off. Please excuse the sneakers, when Josh rode with the Shively's in Kentucky he rode in sneakers to help with his heels, and now I need to do that, too (he was so happy when he saw I had sneakers on, he says I'm becoming a hardcore SS rider LOL). I don't have jods yet, but since it's been so cold I've been riding in my winter full seat breeches and half chaps (which aren't helping my legs LOL), but the jods are coming!

Meet Burkland Taurie Adora and myselfCollapse )

Sorry to those that have already seen these, whether in equestrian or my personal journal. Feel free to add me as a friend, too, I'd love more Saddle seat riders on my list!

current mood: okay

8:22 am - saddle suits

If you were going to buy a saddle suit, where would you buy it? Any recommendations?

Also, color. I don't have my own horse, no clue if I will find a horse to show by summer, but my instructor suggested that I get one so at least I will be prepared if something comes up (and my body isn't going to change anymore, so that's not an issue). Anyway, I'd prefer not to get black, just because everybody has black; could I get away with dark brown or dark green?

1:29 am - Morgan Grand Nationals

Hi everyone =) I'm new to the community, so I'll take a quick minute to introduce myself. My name is Irene and I own three horses - two ponies and the love of my life, my Morgan mare Rio A Diva. Unfortunately I have no English horses at the moment (sad face; "Ria" is a Hunter Pleasure horse, though I'm toying with the idea of taking her Classic next year) but have grown up with, started, shown, and ridden many. I'll be going to William Woods in January to further this crazy saddleseat addiction. =)

Anyhow, I figured that there was a good chance someone in this community was headed to the Morgan Grand National in October. Do I have any takers?? This will be our first time down there (this is the part where I turn green) and I'm so NERVOUS!! If anyone's been down there before, can you possibly tell me about warmup rings, what the barns are like (size of stalls, flooring, blah blah blah), what to watch out for, what to enjoy like mad... and so on. I have friends going as well and will be stabling with a friend's barn (Summit Morgans out of Delano, MN) but am essentially doing this on my own (this isn't anything new; I've been showing by "myself" + a groom usually for about three years and it hasn't stopped our progress any).

12:19 am - Equ horse for sale!

hey everyone! I havent posted in here in sooo long! myspace has taken over lj haha.

well the reason for this post is that im selling my Equ. horse, Trial By Fire. (Ofus)

He's a 13 year old morgan gelding. he's at least 16 hh...we havent sticked him but he stands taller than my sister's horse who is sticked at 16.2hh...yea, he's a big boy! He is an amazing equitation horse...he can do any pattern you put infront of him and does line changes like its nobody's business. He looooves little kids...but needs someone with a little bit of leg to get him going. He has the smoothest trot of any horse iv ever ridden...and iv ridden a lot of horses. its perfect for no irons. I could ride without them all day on him. he has good stall manners and a great personality and i would love to see him go to someone whos gonna spoil him!

If anyone is interested or knows of someone looking for a horse like him please e-mail me at Tricia_7@myway.com or instant message me at ScrChik7993.

4:53 pm - WOW

For those that know Helen Crabtree-by far, THE authority on saddle seat equitation...

My trainer knew her way back. Well, Jean brought some books over today and with them were editions one and two of Helen's book on saddle seat equitation.

The second edition is SIGNED by Helen(who died several years ago) and it says:

"To Bob and Jean-Supertrainers. Love Always, Helen Crabtree"

Holy shit.. she called MY trainer supertrainers. HELEN CRABTREE called JEAN and BOB HART supertrainers. And I have an autographed book..

Oh my gosh.

10:21 am - So I've Finally Got Pictures

Well, somebody on here told me how to upload pictures. So I figured since so many of you have pictures of your horses on here, I might as well share a few shots of Dixie.

This is me and Ledgewind's Sassy Sal (a name she lives up to) aka "Dixie" at the De Equus All English on June 10. It's a professional photo but it didn't scan very well. I'm not sure why, the print I have of this is absolutely beautiful and her eyes look much more expressive. We've come a long way together since that show already though. She's looking AWESOME now!

9:53 pm - Anyone going to Summerfun?

Well, Dixie and I wanted to go to Summerfun but nobody at our barn had signed up (I didn't want to be the only one to go because that's no fun). Now of course, somebody decided to go at the last minute but it's too late for me to get off of work on Saturday (when all the Academy classes are) but I'm off on Friday.

Anyway, I'll be there Friday night to root for Alicia Sacotte and Fine By Me in the 13 and Under Show Pleasure division. If you haven't seen them yet this year, you should. They're headed to Louisville and Tucker is STUNNING! Anyway, just wondering if anyone else is going to be at Summerfun on Friday.

2:10 pm - Newbie

I just joined this community. I grew up in the city and NEVER rode horses. I moved where I live now about a year and a half ago and my sister's friend gave her an Arabian gelding (MHR Ive Arrived) because she got a new horse and couldn't keep 2 horses at once, and they were having no luck selling him. The first time I rode was in October of 2005 and my barn specializes in American Saddlebreds.

Needless to say, by December, I was in love with a mare for sale named Ledgewind's Sassy Sal (AKA "Dixie") and by March, I managed to come up with the money to buy her. She and I have done 2 shows together already and we're doing well in Academy. I want to get out by the end of next summer, but I'm a college student (paying my own tuition) and supporting a horse, so I'm not sure if I can afford to. Anyway, I just thought it would be cool to chat with other people who are interested in the sport. :)

I happened to click "My LJ" on the main livejournal page and it told me that today is saddleseat's birthday!

So happy 3rd anniversary to the community. It's been great getting to know the other saddleseat riders and their horses out in LJ land.
